Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his ambitious scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (Ayushman Bharat) from Jharkhand today. It is also being called the world's largest health program. By the way, this scheme will be effectively implemented 2 days later on 25th September on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. Right now the scheme is going to be implemented in 445 districts in 29 states / union territories of the country, as some states like Odisha and West Bengal have not yet adopted it. How many families are being covered?

About 50 crore people from 10.74 crore families will be beneficiaries under this scheme. Of these, there are about 8 crore rural families and around 24 million urban households. In this way, about 40 percent of the country's population will get medical cover under it. Beneficiary families will be able to get cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year in a government or private hospital included in the panel. The treatment under this will be completely cashless. With the introduction of this scheme, 2.65 lakh beds will be available for the poor in 10,000 government and private hospitals of the country.
Is the center bearing the entire expenditure?
No, the central and state governments will bear the expenses on this scheme. The central government will bear 60 percent of the expenditure on PMJAY and the state governments will bear 40 percent burden. In the current financial year, the center is expected to bear a burden of Rs 3,500 crore due to this scheme. In the budget of 2018-19, the Center has provided token money of Rs 2,000 crore under this head.

The National Health Agency has deployed 14,000 Arogya Mitras to hospitals. They will have the job of verifying the identity of the patients and helping them during treatment.
